A small Moravian town near Brno in the 1920s. In a forest clearing, the mentally disabled Fricek discovers three dead young people: the nineteen-year-old daughter of the local forest ranger Růžena, the butcher's assistant Hrnčíř, and the former student Roubal. Thus begins a detective story that screenwriter Roman Ráž wrote based on a true story. Inspector Vrba is in charge of investigating the case.

The Zodiac Murders series does not aspire to rank among other popular crime serials; it seeks to become one of a new, modern style. The line connecting all its parts are the signs of the zodiac. Each of the twelve episodes deals with a mysterious crime, of characteristics associated with the respective sign. Apart from the standard crime investigation elements, in each episode we can follow a “private“ line, represented by an amorous triangle kept secret, formed by major Holina, the intelligent and competent head of the investigation team, his subordinate captain Rostia Bor, confined to wheelchair due to an accident, and his wife, psychologist Sabina, who studies and uses astrology for psychological personality analysis, thus helping the two detectives in their work.

On the state stud-farm, Tomás (Rudolf Jelínek) is preparing to become a jockey together with other boys. He loves to read cowboy stories and Western pulp magazines and his passion makes him a laughing-stock of his friends and pretty Vera, his couch's daughter. Tomás looks for refuge with aging jockey Kosina (Eduard Dubský) and listens in admiration to his tales of old jockey glory. He doesn't suspect that Kosina had to leave the racecourse because of fraud and that he is still looking for ways to get easy money.

This drama with a criminal plot is a study of the intricately intertwined relationships of four people whose lives have been interrupted by the violent death of a loved one. The story begins almost classically: when a visitor rings the doorbell of a prominent scientist's villa, there is an explosion. The owner is found poisoned by gas in the demolished room. Everything suggests that he committed suicide. But then a major twist comes and the seemingly obvious suicide becomes a well thought out and carefully prepared crime...
